Are Documentaries Journalism? When Prosecutors Decide
Don't miss joining the conversation at the Double Exposure Symposium panel: 'Are Documentaries Journalism? When Prosecutors Decide'
Earlier this year, the US Justice Department made an alarming claim. In a bid to obstruct reporting on the prosecution of a Michigan man accused of terrorism, it argued that documentaries don’t count as journalism, and should not enjoy journalistic privilege.
This panel will examine the case of Trevor Aaronson, The Intercept reporter who is battling this claim, and other cases in which prosecutors have taken it upon themselves to define what is legitimate journalism.
Our panel includes:
⚖️ Trevor Aaronson, Co-Founder of
Florida Center for Investigative Reporting.
⚖️ Seth Stern, Director of Advocacy at
Freedom of the Press Foundation.
⚖️ Kathleen McClellan, Co-Founder & Deputy Director at Whistleblower & Source Protection Program (WHISPeR), ExposeFacts.
⚖️ Patricia Aufderheide, Professor at American University.
⚖️ Gordon Quinn, Artistic Director & Founder of Kartemquin Films.
Join us November 7-10 in Washington, D.C.
