States like Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina have proven that smart on crime policies that reduce incarceration and invest in treatment, alternatives to incarceration, and programming for certain individuals in the criminal justice system can reduce prison and jail populations while also increasing public safety. We need more states to enact smart on crime policies that allow our justice system to focus its limited resources on high-risk individuals while also limiting unnecessary contact with the criminal justice system for those who pose little to no threat to public safety.
