Effective Altruism Needs a Gender Lens
All lives have equal value, but poverty is sexist.
Particularly in sub-Saharan Africa:
❗ Girls receive less schooling than boys
❗ Women have far less political and economic power than men
❗ Women are at greater risk of intimate partner violence
And the list goes on. What’s worrisome: Less than 1% of the $2 billion that GiveWell—the leading effective altruism organization—has directed to organizations that it deems effective has been deployed to address the symptoms of gender inequality. Poverty is not equal, and its structural inequality negatively impacts women and girls.
A gender lens is necessary to address extreme poverty, and this is missing from the effective altruism movement.
