OABT LA Grief post

As we reflect on Día de los Muertos and look ahead to Trans Awareness Week and Trans Day of Remembrance, we honor those we’ve lost and the lessons that grief sheds light on. Grief can be heavy, especially when it’s not shared. When we hold pain alone, we risk internalizing it, which can lead folks to turn to substances like tobacco or nicotine to cope. While they may offer temporary relief, they often deepen cycles of harm that mirror the very systems of oppression we’re fighting to dismantle. To grieve is radical. To resist grief is to resist transformation. When we turn toward our grief—personally and collectively—we move with the natural cycles of the seasons within and around us. As the trees shed their leaves and the daylight grows shorter, it’s natural to feel the weight of loss and darkness. Remember that self-preservation is imperative. Fill your cup with warmth, laughter, good memories, and the company of those who affirm you. Community is healing. Find ways to breathe, connect, and release together with those you trust. Exhale what no longer serves you. Each breath is an act of resistance, a reclaiming of life, of body, of presence. Grief reminds us that things can be taken from us, but also calls us to rebuild, to create new memories and meaning in the lives we still have. Let it transform us into better humans, better community members, better ancestors. In the words of the late Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, “I don’t need their permission to exist; I exist in spite of them.” 🕊️
