It may be peak summertime, but now is the perfect time to start thinking about back-to-school health needs! If you have a child entering 7th grade in West Virginia, make sure immunizations are on your school readiness checklist. 📚
Why are immunizations recommended at this age? As children enter their teen years, they become at risk for certain diseases, like meningococcal disease. The MCV4/MenACWY vaccine, which is required for 7th grade entry, helps protect against meningococcal disease—a serious illness that can cause infections of the brain, spinal cord, and bloodstream.
Students entering 7th grade are also required to receive the Tdap vaccine, which helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This booster helps strengthen immunity as kids grow into adolescence.
While you're at the clinic, talk with your healthcare provider about HPV cancer prevention. The HPV vaccine prevents over 90% of cancers caused by HPV infection. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the HPV vaccine starting at age 9 and can be given during the same visit as the meningococcal and Tdap vaccines.
Talk to a healthcare provider or visit a local health department to make sure your child is up to date on their immunizations before the school bell rings!
