Safe Sleep & Breastfeeding

Safe Sleep & Breastfeeding

It's #SIDSAwarenessMonth Many mothers and birthing people know that breastfeeding offers benefits for both themselves and their babies. But, they may not know that breastfeeding also reduces a baby’s risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Babies who are breastfed or are fed expressed breastmilk are at lower risk for #SIDS compared with babies who were never fed breastmilk. According to research, the longer you exclusively breastfeed your baby (meaning not supplementing with formula or solid food), the lower their risk of SIDS. Helping parents and caregivers learn how to create a safe sleep environment can help more mothers continue breastfeeding while reducing the risk of SIDS. Providers, healthcare professionals, and advocates can share #NICHQ's Safe Infant Sleep Facts and Myths to work with parents and caregivers to reduce the risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrom (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths: https://bit.ly/2YMIY0D. #SIDSAwareness
