Engineering Greatness, Episode 31
In episode 31 of ACI’s “Engineering Greatness,” a video podcast created for young professionals by young professionals, Aakriti Khadka, a recent PhD graduate from North Carolina State University, and Tara Cavalline, PhD., P.E., of UNC Charlotte, share their journeys into civil engineering and concrete materials research. Tara reflects on her path from graduate research at Penn State to a career in structural forensics, as well as the challenges of completing a PhD while teaching, working, and raising a family. Aakriti discusses how Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake inspired her interest in structural safety and resilience, leading to doctoral research focused on the behavior of large-scale concrete bridges. Together, they explore the importance of infrastructure resilience, lessons learned from recent natural disasters, and the challenges of designing durable bridges in demanding environments. The conversation also highlights the role of mentorship, professional involvement, and ACI programs in supporting students and early-career engineers as they build their careers.

ACI Code Advocacy
To be effective, efforts to influence the provisions of building codes require active engagement at all levels—working with officials who affect national model codes, state legislatures, municipal councils, state and local building code councils, and state and local building officials. For ACI to best accomplish its mission, advocacy and outreach should occur at all levels. Watch our ACI Code Advocacy video to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMI6Fpxjabg
Become a Code Advocate or Proponent
Identify the need for a code change proposal. Be a co-proponent or submit a code change proposal to the authority having jurisdiction in your area or the relevant model code, raise the issue of sponsoring code change proposals with your local ACI chapter, and/or contact ACI Code Advocacy Engineers. Building Officials Personnel Document
BUILDING CODE OFFICIALS📢 The ACI Guide on Personnel Qualifications – a FREE resource for Building Code Officials – is now available for download on the ACI website!
➡️ Download Here: https://www.concrete.org/store/productdetail.aspx?ItemID=BOPD&Format=DOWNLOAD&Language=English&Units=US_Units
Building codes require personnel to be certified. These requirements need to be enforced, especially for concrete, the only building material that does not arrive at the jobsite in its final form. PERSONNEL CERTIFICATIONS ARE MANDATORY! Requirements are often buried in referenced standards, so ACI offers access to this document for building officials.
To facilitate the approval process, checklists included in the guide may be downloaded individually for use on each specific project, as needed: Checklist for Qualified Personnel Conducting Tests; Checklist for Qualified Inspectors; and Checklist for Qualified Installers.
Code Advocacy - 3 Ways to Help
The American Concrete Institute envisions a future where everyone has the knowledge needed to use concrete effectively to meet the demands of a changing world. A safely built environment can be achieved by following the design, construction, and testing of concrete as required by ACI codes, standards, and certifications. 🌟
Having ACI codes such as ACI 318, ACI 562, and more adopted into building codes around the world and in your neighborhood helps the industry achieve quality and safety.🏗️🏢 The American Concrete Institute needs your help to reach all the state and local levels around you!
There are three specific ways that you can help the ACI code adoption process in your area:
👉 Become a proponent or advocate

New Research Funded by NEx Advances Fire Performance Knowledge of FRP-Reinforced Concrete Structures
NEx proudly spotlights groundbreaking research published in Cement and Concrete Composites (Elsevier, August 2025), led by Venkatesh Kodur (Michigan State University), M. Z. Naser (Clemson University), and Heesun Kim (Ewha Womans University).
This comprehensive review evaluates the fire behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites at both material and structural levels. It synthesizes fire tests, numerical analyses, and design provisions, while identifying critical knowledge gaps that must be addressed to advance fire-safe adoption of FRPs in civil infrastructure.
A key insight: while FRPs offer corrosion resistance and durability benefits, their fire performance requires further study to ensure structural reliability and safe integration into building codes.
This recognition underscores NEx’s commitment to supporting research that drives innovation, safety, and sustainability in the global construction industry. Read the complete release here: https://www.nonmetallic.org/nex-news/new-research-funded-by-nex-advances-fire-performance-knowledge-of-frp-reinforced-concrete-structures
NEU Materials Guide
NEU is excited to announce to release of The Low-Carbon Concrete Guide: Materials. This guide focuses on practical, data-driven strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of concrete, with particular emphasis on the material and mixture decisions that designers, engineers, contractors, and policymakers make at the project level. The goal is to support performance-based choices that lower emissions meaningfully while meeting the safety, strength, and durability expected of traditional concrete.
This resource provides the context, background, and technical framework needed to understand low-carbon concrete materials and their implications for performance and sustainability.
The Low-Carbon Concrete Guide: Materials is available from the ACI store for $99 for ACI members and $129 for non-members. It can be downloaded at https://www.concrete.org/store/productdetail.aspx?ItemID=LCCGM&Format=PROTECTED_PDF&Language=English&Units=US_Units
