A bipartisan group of 14 senators has issued a powerful letter highlighting the urgent risks of TSA's expanding facial recognition program, which poses significant threats to our privacy and civil liberties. The senators' letter calls for a halt to these plans until rigorous oversight is in place.

Algorithmic audits (or ‘AI audits’) are increasingly popular; however, they remain poorly defined. In this peer-reviewed paper, AJL provides the first comprehensive field scan of the AI audit ecosystem: we identify 438 people and 189 organizations who work on algorithmic audits; identify emerging best practices and barriers in AI auditing, and outline 6 policy recommendations to improve the quality and impact of AI audits. Our recommendations have implications for lawmakers, regulators, internal company policymakers, and standards-setting bodies, as well as for auditors.

The IRS is still using IDme (a for-profit face verification company) for access to critical tax services. Besides capturing our sensitive face data , IDme’s Terms require you to waive your legal rights, grant access to your mobile carrier account, and give the company ownership of the data you upload. We deserve better.

AJL is launching the No Case, No Face campaign to hold the government to its word and ensure every company that works for the government puts protecting our data and our livelihoods front and center. No private company should be allowed to gatekeep our critical tax info, handle sensitive data and use ineffective technologies all while avoiding any meaningful accountability.
