Held annually on the last Tuesday of April, during National Minority Health Month, APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) Awareness Day serves as an opportunity for communities, organizations and families to better understand APOL1-mediated kidney disease and become APOL1 aware.
How to help raise awareness:
Save the date 📅: AMKD Awareness Day is on April 28! APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) is an aggressive form of genetic kidney disease. People of west or central African ancestry who inherited certain variations of the APOL1 gene have an increased risk of developing AMKD. The more you know about your ancestry, the better you can protect your future & your family’s future. Join the @American Kidney Fund in recognizing AMKD Awareness Day & become APOL1 aware. We are proud to support AMKD Awareness Day on April 28, led by the American Kidney Fund to raise awareness of APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD). AMKD is a rapidly progressive form of kidney disease caused by having two APOL1 genetic risk variants. People of West or Central African ancestry are at greater risk of developing this type of kidney disease, which can advance to kidney failure at a faster rate than other types of kidney diseases. Through partnership and community driven collaboration, we aim to expand education, awareness, and access to trusted kidney health resources. Learn more about AMKD here: kidneyfund.org/apol1aware
