“I’m asking you, is that what a black man’s life is worth? $20? This is 2020. Enough is enough.” - Philonise Floyd -- George Floyd lost his life over $20, the same treasury note that was supposed to feature Black icon Harriet Tubman this year. It lost priority with the current administration, as Trump called Tubman's feature "pure political correctness." -- From the Underground Railroad to Chicago Avenue, we're on a very long road to salvation. This is not a headline. This is history. -- June 19th marks 155 years since the end of chattel slavery of Black people in the US; a pivotal event mostly absent from our guiding textbooks and still unrecognized formally by Congress. While awareness of this gross oversight is at fever pitch, understanding how systemic racism has impacted African-American communities, and American society more broadly, has just begun. -- As students of history, our goal is to both listen to and amplify the voices of educators with expertise on this subject. So, today, we ask you to join us in enriching our collective knowledge of this important day and further consider American history as it should be told. There are many avenues for learning and education. We suggest @nmaahc and @naacp as a good place to start.
