Canada doesn’t have to choose between nature and the economy. A new report from Canada’s Nature Advantage shows us how both can thrive together.
Consolidating findings from six independent research reports, Realizing the Value of Nature to Unlock Billions for a Stronger, More Resilient Canadian Economy, the report reveals the value of the essential benefits nature provides – such as clean air and water, climate regulation and fire resilience – and provides actionable pathways to account for that value in a nature-positive economic strategy.
Across Canada, the environmental and economic benefits are clear:
🌾 Farmers in the Lake Winnipeg Basin are transforming their role in conservation through water stewardship action on their farms, generating on average $6,900 per acre in public value through ecosystem services such as pollination habitat, soil health and water regulation — with $33 per acre returned to farmers based on carbon market values in the region.
🌱 Cover crops and reduced tillage in the Prairies can unlock more than $650 million in net financial returns and between $2–$4 billion in public environmental benefits, including water purification, erosion control, pollination and air quality, within a decade.
🌲 Old forest conservation in B.C. returns seven times the initial investment over ten years when carbon markets are properly integrated. Grassland conservation returns three times the investment.

As the Government of Canada works towards a nature-positive economy, outlined in their new A Force of Nature strategy, a new report from Canada’s Nature Advantage shows exactly where the value is and what policy and market tools will unlock it.
The report, Realizing the Value of Nature to Unlock Billions for a Stronger, More Resilient Canadian Economy, reveals the value of Canada’s farms, forests and Indigenous-managed lands and identifies policy and market infrastructure that enables private investment to flow into nature‑positive business models at scale. These pathways make it possible to account for the value nature provides while supporting a resilient and prosperous economy.
For example:
🌿 Harmonizing markets for ecosystem service credits, beginning with carbon and expanding to biodiversity and water, can ensure producers and landowners are rewarded for working with nature, rather than against it. Without carbon revenue, old forest and grassland conservation are simply not investable. With it, they generate returns and attract private capital.
📊 Building the data and measurement infrastructure makes outcomes verifiable, because credible measurement is what makes markets work and holds investors and policymakers accountable for making the best decisions.
