Global freedom declined for the 18th consecutive year in 2023 as leaders around the world redoubled electoral manipulation efforts and incited violent conflict. It's against this backdrop that billions will cast their ballots in 2024.

The new #FreedomInTheWorld report from @freedomhouse documents the 18th consecutive year of global freedom in decline.
The deterioration was largely driven by flawed elections and armed conflict witnessed throughout 2023.

52 countries’ freedom scores declined in 2023, while only 21 improved.
This extensive deterioration directly affected 1/5 of the global population and was most pronounced in Nagorno-Karabakh (-40 pts) and Niger (-18 pts).

Electoral manipulation and violence helped spur the global decline in freedom in 2023.
Of the 52 score declines documented by #FreedomInTheWorld, 26 were due to antidemocratic efforts to interrupt, overturn, or otherwise manipulate the ballot.

#FreedomInTheWorld 2024 finds that 47 countries now earn the worst possible score on our indicator assessing representative rule—up from 28 in 2005.
Rigged elections & military coups are largely behind this race to the bottom.
