Assuring buildings use energy efficiently is essential for protecting human health, economic prosperity and reducing the impacts of climate change. Building energy codes are an important policy tool focused on reducing energy costs, energy use, and emissions. The 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) represents an approximately 40% improvement in energy efficiency for residential and commercial buildings compared to the 2006 edition. National, state and local governments cannot meet their emissions reduction and climate goals without addressing buildings and thus having building and energy codes that align with these goals and intended outcomes.
