Mental Health Toolkit

Alert

The COVID-19 pandemic has deeply impacted the health and well-being of Washingtonians—and young people are especially vulnerable. Many are feeling higher levels of stress, anxiety, and hopelessness. Additionally, COVID-19 has forced youth to be apart from important emotional supports who can help them work through their feelings in healthy ways, like friends, extended family, teachers, and coaches. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) launched campaigns to help youth, ages 12 to 17, through this difficult time by supporting their mental health. These efforts reach youth directly, as well as through their parents/guardians. HOW TO USE THIS TOOLKIT This toolkit includes materials for the two main campaign audiences: You Can – Youth: In May 2020, the You Can campaign expanded to include materials that recognized the additional stress and anxiety youth were feeling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The campaign provided healthy ways for teens to maintain mental and emotional health and tips for staying connected with friends and family while adhering to social distancing policies. Building off of this, this toolkit includes new assets which recognize that it’s “okay to not be okay” right now, encourage healthy ways to cope, and provide resources for those who need more help. Start Talking Now – Parents/Guardians: Research shows when parents and trusted adults are involved in their teenagers’ lives, set clear rules and expectations, and monitor what they do; teens are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs. These conversations are especially valuable during difficult times and/or when teens are struggling with their mental health. This toolkit includes supporting materials, recommendations, and practical tips to help parents and other influential adults start and maintain these conversations. How Can You Help? Here are some ideas for how you can use these materials to help increase mental health support in our state: 1. Share campaign content and the website (https://www.youcanwa.org/) or (http://www.starttalkingnow.org) on your organization's social media channels. There are prepared posts below with messages, images, and videos to share on your social media channels that reach each audience. 2. Adapt the campaign. Our materials can be disseminated as is, or tailored to fit your community. 3. Distribute Campaign Materials. Print flyers/posters using the downloadable file below. Put these up on bulletin boards or in windows. All of the creative assets (videos, radio ads, social, etc.) can also be promoted through your own local ad buys across Washington State. 4. Prepare your staff to talk about the campaigns. A backgrounder on both campaigns is available. Download and send to staff with a link to the rest of the toolkit or dedicate time during your next staff meeting to review.
