Join us on the International Day of Care and Support as we urge governments to invest in the care economy by creating essential, family-sustaining jobs, and to adopt policies and legislation that formally recognizes all types of care work, providing workers with legal tools to ensure their fundamental rights are enforced.
OCTOBER 29, 2024
Care workers are vital to communities - some provide life-saving services when we're sick, others care for our families & homes. No matter the work, all #careworkers deserve decent working conditions, fair wages & social protections!

Sister Sisanda has provided care for expecting & new mothers in her community for nearly 20 years, but it wasn’t until 2021 that her job was recognized as permanent work by South Africa’s government. 🧵

From community health care workers like Sisanda to #domesticworkers in Brazil, millions of #careworkers around the 🌍, including women of color & #migrantworkers, provide critical services but lack legal protections & tools to make their voices heard🧵

Through their union, @NEHAWU, Sisanda & fellow coworkers fought for recognition & are now shifting their focus to using solidarity & collective power to lift up all community health care workers in the country. 🧵

Globally, 60+ million #domesticworkers like Chirlene, many #migrantworkers & #womenofcolor, make it possible for others to do their jobs. Their value to the economy is undeniable, yet they're excluded from labor standards that would ensure their rights.🧵
#InvestInCare
#DayofCare
In Brazil, more than 90% of the country’s #domesticworkers are women & 60% are Black women. Decent work means enforcing #C189 & including domestic workers in the national care policy.🧵

#MigrantWorkers
By organizing unions & forming coalitions & federations like the @IDWFED, Chirlene & #domesticworkers around the 🌍 are fighting to advance domestic worker & #migrantworker rights everywhere. 🧵

In many countries with a shortage of care workers, governments & employers are looking to #migrantworkers to fill the gaps. But their vision doesn’t usually include rights for the #careworkers who migrate. 🧵
#InvestInCare
#DayofCare
Unions & orgs that represent #careworkers are pushing gov'ts to promote fair regular migration pathways that ensure full #workerrights, options for family unity & permanent residence & preserving ability for workers to stay in their home countries. 🧵
