In the wake of COVID-19, it is more important than ever that we house our community's homeless, including former foster youth. That is why the Pathways Housing Program at United Friends is so critical. As an active member of the United Friends community, I am incredibly proud of the work they are doing for homeless former foster youth, including offering a range of services, such as independent living skills training, educational guidance, career development, counseling, and mental health guidance. Mental health is a top priority during these times of social distancing, self-isolation, and general uncertainty...especially for current and former foster youth. I am actively involved with United Friends, a nonprofit organization that is currently providing foster youth with the means to communicate with counselors virtually and continue therapy sessions while at home. COVID-19 is hitting our most vulnerable communities the hardest. As we all know, layoffs have reached an all-time high amid the current health crisis. Foster youth are losing work and having their hours reduced with nowhere to turn. As an involved member of United Friends, I am happy to share their step-by-step guide on how to access unemployment benefits that was created for the foster youth community. For college-age program participants who are out of work, they are currently providing grants to supplement their living expenses in this time of need.
