Welcome to Solitary Confinement: A Human Rights Crisis in the United States, the virtual event hosted by Human Rights Watch and Unlock the Box (the National Campaign to End Solitary Confinement) premiering on February 20 at 8pm EST / 5pm PST, on World Social Justice Day.
When we think of human rights violations, many of us look beyond our borders. But here in the United States, solitary confinement is a human rights crisis hiding behind the walls of our carceral institutions. Solitary confinement isn’t justice – it’s torture, endured by over 122,000 people every day.
📅 On February 20, 2025, Unlock the Box and Human Rights Watch are hosting a virtual event to expose the reality of this human rights crisis and the devastating impact it leaves on individuals, communities, and our criminal legal system. Our panel of speakers includes survivors of solitary offering firsthand accounts of their experiences, legal experts who will discuss the constitutionality of this inhumane treatment, and advocates and researchers who possess an in-depth understanding of the human rights
Patrice Sulton – Founder & Executive Director of DC Justice Lab
Juan E. Méndez – UN Special Rapporteur on Torture (2010-2016)
Alison Leal Parker – Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch’s US Program
Anisah Sabur-Mumin – Campaign Coordinator for Unlock the Box & Lead Organizer for the New York Coalition of Women Prisoners (Solitary Survivor)
Dr. Terry Kupers – Psychiatrist & Professor at The Wright Insitute (Expert on the Effects of Solitary Confinement on Mental Health)
Our panelists will offer their unique perspectives and insights relating to solitary confinement as it intersects with themes such as immigration, border policy, youth rights, political prisoners, racial bias, and the Eighth Amendment.
Viewers are invited to deepen their knowledge, connect with like-minded individuals (via live chat), and inspire meaningful action towards abolishing solitary confinement. Register to watch! (Access link will be shared before the event.)
