Voices for National Service

AmeriCorps members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award when they complete a term of service. The award can be used to pursue a future credential or degree, or to repay qualified student loans, but it’s subjected to federal income tax.

While the award should be an incentive to serve and a tool for making higher education more affordable, many alums are confronted by an unanticipated tax on their educational benefit that is causing financial stress. 

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Tax Relief Act would exclude the Education Award from federal income tax.

AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are the people power that communities count on. They support students, respond to disasters, fight food insecurity, assist veterans and older adults, and help local organizations meet urgent needs in every state. National service also helps participants build skills, gain experience, and prepare for the workforce.

Congress is now making decisions about fiscal year 2027 funding, and lawmakers need to hear directly from the communities that rely on AmeriCorps.

This campaign is intended to help raise awareness and drive action in support of strong FY27 funding for AmeriCorps. Voices for National Service is urging Congress to provide at least $1.291 billion for AmeriCorps in FY27 - a modest increase that would help meet growing demand, restore local capacity, and expand opportunities to serve.

In recent years, Congress has demonstrated bipartisan support for national service, and constituent outreach has helped ensure AmeriCorps remains a priority. As the appropriations process moves forward, now is the time to speak up.

To help address this challenge, Voices for National Service partnered with the EDSAFE AI Alliance, the Partnership for Student Success, and City Year to release a new white paper: Powering Workforce Resilience in the Age of AI: The Case for AmeriCorps.

The paper explores how AmeriCorps can be modernized as a workforce development pathway that builds in-demand skills, expands opportunity, and strengthens communities. 

This campaign is intended to raise awareness of the paper's findings and elevate the role AmeriCorps can play in preparing the next generation for success in an AI-driven economy.
