Cost-Limiting Access Title Screen
Compared with urban populations, rural residents generally have higher poverty rates and have higher uninsured rates than urban areas. At the same time, rural areas often have fewer physician practices, hospitals, and other health delivery resources. These socioeconomic and healthcare challenges place rural populations at a disadvantage for receiving safe, timely, effective, equitable, and patient-centered care.

Chronic Disease Title Screen
In a striking example of the health gap between rural and urban Americans, data from the @cdcgov demonstrates that Americans living in rural areas are more likely to die from chronic disease than their urban counterparts. Many of these deaths were likely preventable.
For example, healthcare providers in rural areas can:
- Screen patients for high blood pressure and make control a quality improvement goal.
- Increase cancer prevention and early detection.
- Encourage physical activity and healthy eating to reduce obesity.
- Promote smoking cessation.
- Promote motor vehicle safety.
- Engage in safer prescribing of opioids for pain.

Chronic Disease #2
In one recent study, 27% of individuals newly diagnosed as having HIV were from rural areas and 32% of all new HIV infections occurred in Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, and North Carolina.
Difficulty accessing healthcare services, an absence of anonymity when seeking care, prevailing stigma, and conservative belief system within rural communities are some of the factors that hinder their search for health care.
This becomes a public health concern because rural patients who forego diagnosis and treatment are more likely both to experience disease progression and to infect others.

Chronic Disease #3
Rural risk factors for health disparities include geographic isolation, lower socioeconomic status, higher rates of health risk behaviors, limited access to healthcare specialists and subspecialists, and limited job opportunities. This inequality is intensified as rural residents are less likely to have employer-provided health insurance coverage, and if they are poor, often are not covered by Medicaid.

Cost-Limiting Access Title Screen
Compared with urban populations, rural residents generally have higher poverty rates and have higher uninsured rates than urban areas. At the same time, rural areas often have fewer physician practices, hospitals, and other health delivery resources.
