Throughout the month of May, the WVU Cancer Institute and Mountains of Hope, the state’s cancer coalition, encourage communities to raise awareness about skin cancer and the screening options available to individuals. This campaign builds upon the American Academy of Dermatology Association’s Melanoma Monday® initiative which works to increase awareness and screening for melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer.
Skin cancer is the most common cancer within the United States. About six million people in the country are treated for the disease every year. Self-screening skin exams and screenings with a dermatologist can help detect skin cancer early, and sun protection efforts can help prevent development of the disease.
This toolkit is intended to help you reach patients, community groups, public health professionals, healthcare organizations, faith communities, hospitals, survivorship groups, and others, and to ultimately increase skin cancer screening and sun protection efforts to save lives.
For more information or assistance accessing the toolkit, please email wvucancer@hsc.wvu.edu
About this campaign:
May is recognized as Skin Cancer Awareness Month to bring awareness to “the most common cancer in the United States – skin cancer”.
Melanoma Monday® created by the American Academy of Dermatology Association is the first Monday in May and brings awareness to the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma.
This toolkit is intended to aid community groups, public health professionals, health organizations, survivorship groups, patients, etc. and increase awareness and save lives.
Skin Cancer Data
Anyone can develop skin cancer, and most cases “are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps”.
The most common types of skin cancer include basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma.
Within the United States, over 90,000 people were diagnosed and over 8,000 people died of melanoma in 2021.
About six million people in the United States are treated for skin cancer every year.
Skin cancer can affect any person, and individuals with lighter skin tones are at higher risk for the disease.
For people of color who develop skin cancer, the disease is often diagnosed in later stages.
