A common question has come up and that’s, "Why does codifying abortion rights matter in a state like CA?"
While California does have laws that protect a person's right to choose an abortion, the recent ruling by the conservative Supreme Court has made it clear - we must take explicit action in California to ensure that people continue to have the power to control their own bodies and their personal decisions, without any shadow of a doubt. Thank you so much, @eqca for your endorsement of Prop 1 and your powerful words of support. “Reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ equality are linked by the fight for bodily autonomy. We all seek control over our own bodies. We decide whether and with whom to have intimate relationships, when to start a family, whether to seek gender affirming care to align with our gender identity - We want to live as our true selves as determined by us, not by others.”
May this be a reminder that the necessity of Prop 1 touches every single California community. Vote #yesonprop1

“Standing in unity with the educators, students and families we serve, the CTA Board made the policy-based decision to support Prop. 1. Our mothers, daughters, partners, sisters and friends should have the freedom and right to determine their healthcare and to make deeply personal decisions on their own, a fundamental human right,” said CTA President E. Toby Boyd. “Our freedom to make personal and private decisions, not just about our health but also about our families and our lives, is at risk with the recent Supreme Court decision.”

“Californians can no longer count on federal protections. They need to explicitly embed rights to choose an abortion and to choose or refuse contraception in their state constitution. Proposition 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot would do just that…[Prop 1] is perhaps the most important measure on the upcoming ballot.”

Prop 1 protects a person’s right to an abortion - an intimate health care decision that should be made a health care provider and that person. Vote #yesonprop1
Dr. Shannon Connolly, a CA-based family physician, explains in a Los Angeles Daily News op-ed the importance of ensuring that important medical decisions are left to a person and their provider.
“At its core, Prop 1 secures the right for Californians to decide when and how they have a family, keeping intimate medical choices where they should stay - between people and their medical team. As Physician, I see how the patchwork access to abortion we’re experiencing has led to confusion and hopelessness for many - which is exactly why we need to act in California.”

Californians overwhelmingly do not want to see this right taken away through the overturning of Roe v Wade. The AAPI Caucus is committed to ensuring the AAPI community has equal access to essential services, including health care like abortion and contraceptives, which is why we are proud to stand strong in our support of Proposition 1,” said Senator Richard Pan, M.D. (D-Sacramento).
“As a physician, I know how important it is that medical decisions like abortion stay between a person and their provider, not driven by political agendas. Abortion bans happening across the country are confusing for our AAPI and immigrant communities, especially as these changes are not communicated in native languages. The result is reduced access to care for those who need it most. Prop 1 will ensure that abortion and contraceptive access remain available, regardless of which political party is in power or who controls the court.”

The LA times editorial board was clear about why Californians should vote Yes on Prop 1 this Fall.. "every state needs to have the right to an abortion stated in its constitution. Here is the key reason to vote for the measure: when a constitutional amendment is in place, any restriction that violates a right to abortion won't survive a court challenge without extraordinary justification."
As a country, we witnessed SCOTUS overturn Roe v. Wade deeming that the right to privacy does not extend to abortions - the same right to privacy that had protected people for nearly 50 years and the same right to privacy that protects the right to an abortion under California state law. What has become clear from all of this is that things change in the blink of an eye, and we must take all of the protective steps necessary to ensure that Californians never have to risk a day when their reproductive rights are stripped from them.

This November (October for mail-in ballots!!) Vote #yesonprop1
The LA times editorial board was clear about why Californians should vote Yes on Prop 1 this Fall.. "every state needs to have the right to an abortion stated in its constitution. Here is the key reason to vote for the measure: when a constitutional amendment is in place, any restriction that violates a right to abortion won't survive a court challenge without extraordinary justification."

Californians will not stand silent as states across the country revoke long-standing abortion rights. This Fall, we have the opportunity to enshrine abortion rights into our state constitution, ensuring that necessary reproductive health care stays safe and legal to future generations.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a right-wing conservative with radical views, has introduced a federal ban on abortion, even more restrictive than earlier versions he has advocated for. Republicans have made it clear that they see this heinous bill as a “positive stepping stone.”
In California, we need Prop 1 to send a message loud and clear - abortion should be safe and accessible.

Thank you @eleniforca @thegregsarris and @cmadocs Seema Sidhu for our unwavering support of Prop 1 and for expressing its importance to Californians.
“Although California law provides meaningful protections for reproductive rights against state interference, the recent opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court highlights how California will no longer be able to rely on long-standing federal protections. Expressly stating a fundamental right to abortion in the state constitution will protect against potential future attacks at the federal level and from courts down the line. Additionally, the opinion previews how the Court plans to erode privacy principles under the U.S. Constitution, which protects some of our most basic civil rights.” Head to the link in bio to read the full release.

We need to act now to ensure abortions remain safe and legal in California and that important health care decisions are left to a person and their provider with the backing of science and evidence based medicine - not written by a political agenda.
Prop 1 will add the right to an abortion directly into the California State Constitution to ensure that, in California, people continue to have the power to control their own bodies and personal decisions.

Why is Prop 1 so important in a state like California?
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Americans were shown that their constitutional right to privacy was subject to dangerous interpretation. The privacy rights of the American people, which covers a wide swath of our basic rights and liberties, are central to American freedom. In California, Prop 1 will explicitly add the basic right to abortion and the use of contraceptives within the state constitution. In California, only a majority of voters - not legislators - can amend the state constitution.
"Prop 1 protects the most vulnerable...As political leaders, we must do all we can to protect and advance the rights of those we represent… We can achieve this by voting YES on Prop 1.”
